For Newcomers

Shire Information & Links

Welcome all Newcomers to the Shire of Sol Haven!!!

The Shire of Sol Haven was founded as a branch of the SCA in the great Kingdom of Meridies as a Canton of the Barony of the South Downs on May 31st, A.S. XXIII (1988), and became an independent Shire in September of A.S. XXIX (1994).

Our Populace Meetings are held on the 2nd Sundays of every month in conjunction with our Archery/Live Weapons Practices on Thorn Apple Court near the Target in Conyers. Our Arts & Sciences Classes are held on the 4th Thursdays of every month at 7:30pm at the St. Simon's Episcopal Churchat 1522 Highway 138, Conyers, GA 30012. For directions and details please feel free to contact our Chatelaine at sh_chatelaine@solhaven.com.

More activities are listed in The Equinox (the Shire's monthly newsletter) and also on this website on the Shire Activities and Shire Calendar pages. Kingdom Level events can be found on the Merdian Kingdom Calendar.

We do not charge local dues to be a part of the Shire of Sol Haven. However, you will have added benefits if you become a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism through the international organization by going to the SCA Membership Page.

The Shire's Award Winning newsletter "The Equinox" has been published monthly since July of A.S. XXIV (1989), and is now available as a .pdf document emailed monthly to those with subscriptions -- contact sh_chronicler@solhaven.com for details.  When a Newcomer first attends one of our Populace Meetings, and furnishes contact information, we offer them a free 6-month electronic subscription to The Equinox. If they like what they are receiving, they can then subscribe to the Newsletter for a very reasonable amount.

We have maintained an electronic Shire List for some time, and have a Facebook Fan Page and Group to aid in communications. The Kingdom of Meridies also has a Facebook Group.

Our history includes numerous performances by "The Sol Haven Players" and "The Not Necessarily Bards", and the founding of "The Meridian Friar's Club", and we are well known for our signature "Adopt-a-Peer Dolls". We also have a long-running (and Blackfox Award winning) comic strip called "Shire! Shire!" which is archived at http://www.covingtoncastle.com/solhaven/sscom.htm and is available for SCA Chrocinclers to reprint in their newsletters if they ask for permission.

The Shire has been hosting popular and entertaining weekend events since Spring of A.S. XXIII (1989). Our first three events were called "Rites of Spring", and then we began hosting our signatuire event "Legends", with each event built around a particular Legend or Legendary individual or group. Our events have featured Fighting (Heavy & Rapier), Live Weapons (Archery and Thrown Weapons like axes, knives and spears), Feasting, and Arts & Sciences (Competitions and Classes). SCA Events, which are participatory and do require attendees to be in garb, are surprisingly inexpensive, given everything they offer, and are lots of fun.

Newcomers are welcome to our Shire, and we take great pride in our friendly approach, and in our willingness to help new people to fit in.  Additional newcomer information can also be found on the web pages for the Kingdom Chatelaine, and on the the Society Newcomer Page.
